Music is an art form too

Music is an art form too

I don’t claim to be very musical myself although I love music and was once married to a musician, so I have spent some time around the medium and do understand some things about it other than just its appeal to me as something I enjoy listening to!

So what can we say about music in such a brief format as one blog post?

Music is an art form where the medium is sound. It can be divided into genres and subgenres like classical, jazz, blues, heavy metal, punk, alternative or industrial which can cover metal, rock and dance etc as sub genres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, and sometimes open to individual interpretation. It can occasionally be controversial.

As an art, music would be classified as a performing art, a fine art, and an auditory art and it has no boundaries, in that it is the expansion of unlimited reality. Art, in any of its forms, is generated by a person, or a group of talented yet usually ordinary people, who express, (whether on purpose or not.), an opinion regarding present times.

In many cultures music is an important part of their way of life. In fact music encompasses mind, body, and feeling and is universal, cultural and individual. You cannot pin it down to any one thing as it goes much deeper than that and the creators of music (Musicians!) like visual artist have that need to create as much as they need to breathe as it is not a want; it is a need. If you try to imagine yourself without it, you are bound to feel incomplete.

Everyone has the liberty to express themselves in which ever way they prefer, through music. It is the most universal of all art forms. And best of all we get to confront it on a daily basis.

As for me, well I’m off to buy another CD, probably something calm and mellow for me to listen to while driving in Auckland traffic!
