Magrittes 'This is not an Apple' by Collette

In 2011, Collette, a New Zealand contemporary artist based in the Waikato, created a piece titled "This is not an apple painting" for a biannual New Zealand art show, the Fakes & Forgeries exhibition in Mangaweka.

The Fakes & Forgeries show in Mangaweka is a unique platform that celebrates artists' creative interpretations and playful imitations of famous artworks. It's a testament to the small town's connection to its most famous artist, renowned for his exceptional Goldie fakes and forgeries.

The exhibition encourages artists to interact with well-known pieces, either by crafting convincing forgeries or by infusing classic works with their unique twists. This vibrant event showcases the skill and ingenuity of contemporary artists, inviting viewers to examine the intriguing realm between original art and imitation.

René Magritte: "Ceci n'est pas une pomme" (This is not an apple)

This artwork pays homage to René Magritte's iconic lithograph painting of an apple that includes the text "Ceci n'est pas une pomme" (This is not an apple).

Magritte's original piece, part of his iconic "The Treachery of Images" series, challenges viewers' perceptions of reality and representation. By stating that the image of an apple is not an actual apple, Magritte compels us to question the relationship between objects and their representations. His work is a cornerstone of surrealist art, blending wit and profound philosophical questions.

My artwork is a playful homage to Magritte's style, adding a twist of my own. I translated the text to English and placed it at the bottom of the image, creating a fresh interpretation. The finished piece, measuring 330mm x 420mm, is framed in a recycled antique frame that perfectly complements the painting's style.

I created this artwork for the exhibition but loved it so much that I kept it in my collection. It now hangs in my dining room, often sparking interesting conversations over dinner.

If you found this piece intriguing, you might also be drawn to 'The Silent Scream,' a contemporary interpretation of Edvard Munch's 'The Scream.' This artwork, like the one you've just explored, offers a fresh perspective on a classic, making it a must-see for art enthusiasts.
