NFS - In 2011, I created an artwork titled "This is not an apple painting" for The Fakes & Forgeries exhibition in Mangaweka. This piece was a playful take on the famous Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte's lithograph painting of an apple, which features the text "ceci n est pas une pomme" (This is not an apple) painted above an image of an apple.
While Magritte's painting challenges our perception of reality and representation, my artwork was intended as a fun homage to his style. The original artwork that inspired my piece is linked below, but I changed the text to English and placed it at the bottom rather than the top to make it my own.
The finished artwork measures 330mm x 420mm, and I chose to frame it in a recycled antique frame that suited the style of the painting. While I created the artwork for the exhibition, I decided to keep it for myself as I really liked how it turned out.
The text was changed to English in my version. I chose to place the wording at the bottom instead of at the top, and having this piece in my dining room often causes some interesting conversations over dinner.
